Make a small design brief

Modern-style builds are easier when you plan proportions before collecting decorative blocks. A clean outline, repeated materials and deliberate window placement matter more than expensive materials. Start with a simple rectangular footprint such as nine blocks by eleven blocks. This is a suggested practice layout, not a blueprint that must match a particular world.

• Entrance: one obvious path from outdoors.
• Storage: close to the crafting area, not hidden across the building.
• Light: check the interior and the outdoor approach.
• Expansion: leave one side clear for a future room or stairway.

A step-by-step 9 × 11 layout

1. Mark the outer corners with temporary blocks; walk around the rectangle to check the view.
2. Reserve a three-block-wide approach toward the front door.
3. Split the interior into a larger workspace and a smaller storage or sleeping area.
4. Raise a simple frame, then decide where the windows go before filling entire walls.
5. Use two or three complementary materials rather than changing block types on every wall.
6. Add safe roof access only if you have a reason to use it, such as a lookout or garden.

A second floor can wait. Finish one usable level first so your base works even when you do not have time to complete the decoration.

Make the build work in survival mode

Place workstations and storage where you naturally walk after gathering resources. Check that doors and paths are unobstructed and that mobs cannot enter through forgotten openings. If you use glass prominently, balance visibility with lighting and safe nighttime access. For an early-game alternative, start with the first-night shelter route.

Personalize without losing the design

Try one accent color, a recessed doorway or a contrasting roof band. Compare the building at daytime and nighttime before adding more details. A structure that looks good from one angle but is hard to move through is not finished; usability is part of the design.
